Advising Information for New First-Year Students Stacks of Books in Library

Academic Advising Over the Summer

Some of the first questions we get asked after the excitment of learning you've been admitted to UC San Diego and Eighth College are, "So what classes will I take?" and "Who helps me so I know what to sign up for?" Great questions, and we're excited to help you with this!

Below you will find a look at the timing of when you'll get access to academic advising and resources. Note that most of this happens over the later summer months. Since UC San Diego is on a quarter schedule (as opposed to semesters), some of these dates might "feel" late. You are not behind and no need to stress!  Fall classes do not start until the end of September and class registration for your 1st quarter takes place towards the middle of August. So take a deep breath and enjoy your last summer before college!

We've got your back!

Summer Timeline

May 15th: New Triton Advising (NTA) - Starting May 15th, go to the Virtual Advising Center (VAC) at vac.ucsd.edu and enter your Academic Information by June 28th. This is the first part of your required Enrollment Checklist process.

August 5th-9th: Enrollment and Academic Planning Webinar - Offered in early August, this mandatory webinar will be Part I of your Eighth College Orientation experience. Eighth College Academic Advisors will provide information on how to prepare for Fall Quarter enrollment and answer your academic questions. A student panel will also be available to share advice on how to approach your first quarter at UC San Diego. We invite Triton Supporters to attend the webinar with their student but due to capacity restrictions we ask that they do not register or attempt to join the zoom separately

While not required, the Eighth College Academic Advisors will also be holding debrief sessions following the Enrollment and Academic Planning Webinars for students who still have questions or thought of questions after the webinar.

August 7th: Enrollment Guidance - Starting August 7th, go to the Virtual Advising Center (VAC) and review Enrollment GuidanceNote: Enrollment Guidance must be viewed before new students will have access to the Ask a Question feature in the Virtual Advising Center (VAC).

August 8th: Online Advising - Starting August 8th, once new students have viewed their Enrollment Guidance, Eighth College Academic Advisors will be available to answer academic questions via the Ask a Question feature in the Virtual Advising Center.

Mid-August: Speed Advising - Following the Enrollment and Academic Planning Webinars and before enrollment begins, incoming students will have the option to sign up for individual advising to review their planned fall schedule. These speed advising sessions will be 15 minutes on zoom and sign up information will be sent out closer to the start of speed advising.

Resources for New First-Year Students

Exam Credit Equivalencies:

Credit Charts for both the Advanced Placement (AP) exams as well as the International Baccalaureate (IB) exams are available on the Degree Requirements page of the Eighth College website. We highly encourage you to review these charts if you have completed exams that may earn you academic credit!

Additional Helpful Resources:

  • Alternatives to Selective Majors: If you did not get into one of UC San Diego's selective majors, fear not! There are opportunities to apply as a continuing student, and there are great alternatives for most majors! Our friends at Seventh College put together a handy guide of alternatives to selective majors for you to explore your options.
  • Computing Paths: Interested in studying computing? UC San Diego provides a wide array of majors (not only Computer Science) that offer students a unique computing experience.
  • Exploring Academic Interests: If you're not rock solid on your major choice (and even if you are), know that your major or minor does not dictate your path or what a successful next step looks like for you. You control your adventure! If you're looking for somewhere to start, explore traditional professions and paths by academic interest.
  • Health Beat at the Career Center: If you're interested in pre-health/pre-med fields, explore health professions and prepare for the application process through participation in events, workshops, and pre-health advising (including information on med/graduate school pre-requisites) through the Health Beat program.

Academic Requirements and Resources

Below are resources for understanding your academic requirements as a student at UC San Diego. Some requirements have multiple ways to complete them and others you will need to take at UC San Diego. You don't need to worry about mastering it all just yet, you'll receive more information throughout your orientation process.

Enrolling in Summer Courses Prior to Starting at UC San Diego

If you decide to complete summer courses prior to starting at UC San Diego, it is your responsibility to avoid enrolling in courses for which you will receive credit through Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams and/or community college coursework.

If you anticipate receiving AP/IB credit and/or transfering in college-level coursework, you do not want to take another course towards a requirement you might have already fulfilled. Best to take something you know for sure, you won't be duplicating efforts!

We have provided tips in the sections below to help you choose summer coursework wisely.

Entry Level Writing Requirement

The Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR) is required for all undergraduates at UC San Diego. While some students will complete this requirement before arriving at UCSD, others will complete this requirement after they begin their studies here.

If you have not met the ELWR, there are a few ways you can clear this requirement before the beggining of Fall Quarter.

  • You can complete a UC transferable English Composition course (with a "C" or better) at a community college prior to the start of Fall:
    • Visit assist.org and go to the “Search below for transferable courses box” on the right side of the screen
    • Select “Academic Year”
    • For “Community College” select the community college you plan to attend
    • Select “UC Transfer Admission Eligibility Courses” and click “View Transferability Lists”
    • For “View Transferable Course by:” select “UC Transfer Eligibility Area”
    • Select “UC-E - English Composition” to see a list of the courses that will clear your ELWR
  • Or, you can also clear the ELWR via the Writing Placement Process at UC San Diego.

Eighth College General Education Requirements

To select courses that will fulfill Eighth College General Education requirements:

  • Review the Eighth College Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) charts on the degree requirements page so you know if any of your scores satisfy Eighth College general education requirements.
  • Review list of UC San Diego courses approved to fulfill Eighth College's general education breadth requirements. You can see the Degree Requirements for First-Year Students to get a feel for Eighth's curriculum structure.

Use assist.org to find equivalent courses if you plan to attend a community college the summer before you attend UC San Diego.

  • Visit assist.org and go to the “Search below for articulation agreements” box
  • Select “Academic Year”
  • For “Institution” select “University of California, San Diego”
  • For “Agreements with Other Institutions” select the community college you plan to attend and click “View Agreements”
  • For “View Agreement by:” select “Department”
  • Select department of interest and click the “View Agreement” box at the right of the screen to see UC transferable courses and what course (if any) they are equivalent to at UC San Diego
  • If you plan to do this, we recommend you take a course that is exactly equivalent to a UC San Diego course on our Breadth Requirement Course list to ensure it meets an Eighth College requirement

Major Requirements

Visit your major's website to see their requirements and how to connect with their advising staff. Note that because you will not have transcripts posted until late August major advisors may not be able to give you specific/individualized advise.

Sending Summer Transcripts to UC San Diego

After completion of summer coursework, send an official transcript to Admissions. There are a few ways to send transcripts to UC San Diego and you can find the instructions here under ‘How and when do I send my official transcripts?’.

Please allow 10-12 weeks for Admissions to evaluate your transcripts and post credits to your Academic History on MyTritonLink.
