Advising Information for New Transfer Students Stacks of Books in Library

Academic Advising Over the Summer

Some of the first questions we get asked after the excitment of learning you've been admitted to UC San Diego and Eighth College are, "So what classes will I take?" and "Who helps me so I know what to sign up for?" Great questions, and we're excited to help you with this!

Below you will find a look at the timing of when you'll get access to academic advising and resources. Note that most of this happens over the later summer months. Since UC San Diego is on a quarter schedule (as opposed to semesters), some of these dates might "feel" late. You are not behind and no need to stress!  Fall classes do not start until the end of September and class registration for your 1st quarter takes place towards the middle of August. So take a deep breath and enjoy your summer before starting at UC San Diego!

We've got your back!

Summer Timeline

June 22: New Triton Advising (NTA) - Starting June 22nd, go to the New Triton Advising and enter your Academic Information by July 1st. This is the first part of your required Enrollment Checklist process.

Once you have complete your New Triton Advising, you'll receive access to the Virtual Advising Center where Eighth College Academic Advisors will be available to answer academic questions via the Ask a Question feature.

Mid-July: Access to Triton Student System (TSS)- Starting in mid-July, you'll be able to access the Triton Student System (TSS) which houses information about your academic history, financial aid, and is where you log in to book (sign up for) classes.

July 27-31: Enrollment and Academic Planning Webinar - Offered in late July, this mandatory webinar will be Part I of your Eighth College Orientation experience. Eighth College Academic Advisors will provide information on how to prepare for Fall Quarter enrollment and answer your academic questions. A student panel will also be available to share advice on how to approach your first quarter at UC San Diego. We invite Triton Supporters to attend the webinar with their student but due to capacity restrictions we ask that they do not register or attempt to join the zoom separately

Early-August: Speed Advising - Following the Enrollment and Academic Planning Webinars, incoming students will have the option to sign up for individual advising to review their planned fall schedule. These speed advising sessions will be 10 minutes on zoom and sign up information will be sent out following the Enrollment and Academic Planning Webinar.

Resources for New Transfer Students

Triton Transfer HUB:

The Triton Transfer HUB provides resources, services, and programs to empower Triton Transfers to achieve their goals as they navigate UC San Diego's academic and cultural landscape. The Triton Transfer HUB assist students in their transition through active engagement in opportunities that support their paths and build community so they thrive academically, professionally, and personally.

Over the summer, we highly recommend New Transfer attend the Summer Transfer Enrichment Program (STEP) which prepares incoming Triton Transfers for success in their transfer to UCSD. This program designed exclusively for incoming transfer students by providing a variety ways they can connect with information, resources, and each other, all before stepping onto campus for the first time in September.

Additional Helpful Resources:

  • How to Read your Degree Audit (available mid-July): The degree audit is a helpful tool for reviewing your requirements in real time! It's also very important to review your degree audit for accuracy periodically so it's good to start familiarizing yourself with the tool now.
  • How to use the Virtual Advising Center (available after completing New Triton Advising): If you ever have a question and want to get into contact with your Academic Advisors at UC San Diego, this is the best place to start. You can submit questions, check our drop-in and appointment availability, or look back at past messages!
  • Alternatives to Selective Majors: If you did not get into one of UC San Diego's selective majors, fear not! There are great alternatives for most majors! Check out this handy guide of alternatives to selective majors for you to explore your options.
  • Computing Paths: Interested in studying computing? UC San Diego provides a wide array of majors (not only Computer Science) that offer students a unique computing experience.
  • Health Beat at the Career Center: If you're interested in pre-health/pre-med fields, explore health professions and prepare for the application process through participation in events, workshops, and pre-health advising (including information on med/graduate school pre-requisites) through the Health Beat program.

Academic Requirements and Resources

Below are resources for understanding your academic requirements as a student at UC San Diego. Some requirements have multiple ways to complete them and others you will need to take at UC San Diego. You don't need to worry about mastering it all just yet, you'll receive more information throughout your orientation process.

Enrolling in Summer 2026 Courses at UC San Diego

If you decide to enroll in Summer Session courses at UC San Diego prior to your first fall quarter, it is your responsibility to avoid enrolling in courses for which you will receive credit through transfer coursework, Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams.

Since you will be transferring in coursework from your previous school(s), it's best to take something you know for sure, you won't be duplicating efforts!

We have provided tips in the sections below to help you choose summer coursework wisely.

Major Requirements

We recommend focusing on major coursework in your first quarter (or two if you start with Summer Session). The reason for this is transcripts can take time to process and in some cases may not all be applied to your degree requirements prior to fall enrollment. Eighth College Advisors will be reviewing your transfer coursework starting in the summer and will confirm your remaining GE's over the summer and fall.

Visit your major's website to see their requirements and how to connect with their advising staff. Note that because you will not have transcripts posted until late August major advisors may not be able to give you specific/individualized advise.

Eighth College General Education Requirements

To select courses that will fulfill Eighth College General Education requirements:

  • Review the Degree Requirments for Transfer Students to see which transfer requirements will be required based on the transfer pathway you've completed. Our Advising Team will also be reviewing transcripts over the summer and fall to confirm transfer pathways.
  • If you have completed Advanced Placement (AP) and/or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams in addition to your transfer coursework, review the Eighth College AP Chart and Eighth College IB chart so you know if any of your scores earn UC San Diego course credit.

Use assist.org to find equivalent courses if you attended a community college in California prior to attending UC San Diego.

  • Visit assist.org and go to the “Search below for articulation agreements” box
  • Select “Academic Year”
  • For “Institution” select “University of California, San Diego”
  • For “Agreements with Other Institutions” select the community college you plan to attend and click “View Agreements”
  • For “View Agreement by:” select “Department”
  • Select department of interest and click the “View Agreement” box at the right of the screen to see UC transferable courses and what course (if any) they are equivalent to at UC San Diego
  • If you plan to do this, we recommend you take a course that is exactly equivalent to a UC San Diego course on our Breadth Requirement Course list to ensure it meets an Eighth College requirement

Sending Summer Transcripts to UC San Diego

After completion of summer coursework, send an official transcript to Admissions. There are a few ways to send transcripts to UC San Diego and you can find the instructions here under ‘How and when do I send my official transcripts?’.

Please allow 10-12 weeks for Admissions to evaluate your transcripts and post credits to your Academic History in the Triton Student System.

Non-Academic Related Resources

Your academic advising team in Eighth College will often act as a one stop resource when you have non-academic related questions. Below are some of the most common resources we refer students to over the summer.
